A saggar is a container used to hold pottery during the firing. Materials such as salt, copper, sawdust, and metals are placed in the saggar along with the unglazed pottery. During the firing process the materials burn and fume to produce the dramatic color and pattern effects. The smooth surface of the vessel comes from burnishing the clay before it is fired. ~ 5x5.
